would putting on a smaller 305 on a 350 engine help it?

Nope.

Might even hurt it. Timing marks on a 305 are different then an early 350.

Gary's right about the timing marks, on a 305 there are at 12 o'clock and you have the long water pump also and you have to look down in between the timing cover and the water pump to see them, and the 350 is at about 2 to 2:30 with not much in the way, if having power steering the pump is there but not in the way. Hope this also helps you.

Edit, I didn't see the date on this first, he probably has his fix I would guess
