rear axles.

hey guys..

What rear axles will enterchange with my 10 bolt axles I have now?

I've asked this before in other forums but never got a Fore sure answer.

It's time to change my 6 bolt axles for 5 bolt.

Re: rear axles.

Ron,
I always thought any later (73 up) half ton axle would interchange?
I got a real education when I had the rear end in my 56 rebuilt. That was a 10 bolt, but I learned that there are (at least) 2 different lengths available. Of course, mine had to take the expensive ones...........

Re: rear axles.

My 72 has a 5-lug with a 5 on 5" spacing and its a 12 bolt. These axles came on disc brake trucks. From what I am reading the rear end is a simple swap with the 71-72 coil rears bolting right in and the axles themselves are the same from 71-87. The big problem is these 5 lug axles are longer than the 6-lug. I did find these conversion axles at Early Classic.
1963-'69 6-Lug Replacement Axle Shafts (Pair)
The 6-Lug Replacement Axles are a direct replacement for your factory '63-'69 (30 Spline)6-lug set up. These precision machined parts are American-made.

$319

Might be cheaper to swap in a 12 bolt rear from a 71=72 if you can find one.

Re: rear axles.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out.

I need to change out my 4:10's to more like Highway gears anyway, so, maybe I'll check out a complete junkyard rear end and build it before I do the changeover.?

I'm looking for more of a wheel choice.. I've been thinking for years about a set of car type chromed Rallies.

Re: rear axles.

Lots of luck on the wheel choice thing. 5x5 is a rather limited choice.
