Motor size?

Bought a 66 Step side that the guy said it had been changed to a 350, however the guy is...... a bit on the slow side and I have learned that there were multiple engines available for the 66. I did a vin search but the ones I checked out require 17 numbers/letters. Being before 81, the truck only has 12. So my question is, how can I tell which engine is in it. Its and 8, but is it a 307, 327 or a 350? Any help would be appreciated

Re: Motor size?

Tell us the numbers on the back of the block, by the bell housing and we can help you.

Your Casting numbers is not in the same area of your starter, they are usually behind the Drivers side Head like the pic below shows only this one shows its a 5.7L/350 probably a newer block. Now some engines (305's) have them on the Opposite side (passenger's) area behind the head also. Casting numbers are right at the point the Bell Housing or a Auto Trans bolts to the engine. By the way 66 had only two engines, a 283 & 327 for that year only.

Chevrolet V-8 Casting numbers can consist of Six to Eight (6-8) numbers. Here is a book see below that shows Castings Numbers; Blocks,Heads,Intakes,Exhaust,Water Pumps. $15.00. good book to have.

Like said before NUMBERS PLEASE.

Re: Motor size?

Had surgery yesterday, too cold out right now. As soon as my Son or I get out there to put that starter in we will look for it and I will post those numbers.
I seen two inline 6's and an 8, Autoslow (Autozone) said they listed two 8's listed for that year. Only bad thing about buying an older vehicle, especially ones thats not a one owner. No idea what was really done to it.

Yeah buying Vehicles with Multi past owners can end up being a can of worms with problems. My 68 C10 has set me back $4500 in much needed parts just to get it to somewhat a Original parts fitting Truck.

I call my Truck Junkyard Dog being past owners have ""Thoroughly Molested"" it with what ever kind of parts just to keep it going down the road
