Baby steps
My progress will be slow but at least it is shaping up a bit. Ended up giving the camper shell away on Craigs list, tried to sell it for $100 but no takers. The last thing my wife wants is discarded car parts lying around the back yard, so I gave it to a guy with a '71 C10 beater. The wheels are off of my Dad's '29 roadster pick up, they are just sitting in front of the truck. Dropped 4" with some Wite walls and now we are talking.

Re: Baby steps
Added a little bling yesterday. Just got it back from polishing. I think that the rest of the molding is comming off and I will weld up the holes before painting. Came out great for an original grill.

Re: Baby steps
Well I added some much needed performance under the hood. The Quadrajet was old and tired, I got quotes for over $200 to completely rebuild it. The new edelbrock 600 cfm was $240, found the performer intake on craigs list for $60, and the HEI dizzy was $90. Got it all together and no leaks and pulls strong with much better throttle response. Drove it 50 miles yesterday and towards the end of the trip I kept hearing a metal sounding knocking noise. pulled in the driveway and popped the hood only to find my water pump shaft had sheared and it was being held on only by the belts, good thing it didn't take out my radiator Like a good sled dog it got me home.
I do have one question for you carb specialists: I am getting a pretty good hesitation when I step on the gas. After that it is fine just the initial goose. I watched my DVD from edelbrock and their trouble shooting response to this problem is to adjust the accelerator pump to give it a bigger squirt of gas. That fix did nothing to help, I get great response at freeway speeds. My timing is 8 degrees before, and have tried several other settings but landed on the standard. Does the HEI need to be timmed different or is this all a carb problem?
I posted some pics of when I bought and how it sits today, ordering the K&N filter today.

Re: Baby steps
Looks nice Barn Owl! What are the two red wires going to the drivers side of the carb?
Not sure abut your hesitation, how do the plugs look? Do they appear to be running rich?

Man those are big baby steps, I noticed one thing in the picture under the hood you have the fuel line touching the heater hose, I had that and was have problems that turned out to be my gas was getting hot. Anyway we moved the hose and I still am going to go up all the way to the top with the steel and make the turn then filter right away and barely have enough room to make a turn in the hose. Sure does look nice with the chrome front end I was very happy when mine came.

Re: Baby steps
S/T, that is a souloution to a problem that I think edelbrock hasn't really wanted to address fully. The TH400 tranny has an electric kick down solenoid which is activated by a rather large limit switch on the OEM Q-Jet. It is bullet proof but there is no arm for the activation of this large switch on the new carb. There fix was to use a small micro switch that is designed for there WOT nitro kit which mounts to the passenger side choke assembly. First the kit cost $28 bucks and nobody in town had one. The kit consisted of a micro switch and a bent piece of aluminum for a bracket (well it was acctually a nice billet machined aluminum anodized red with edelbrock etched into it) all of which nobody will ever see because it is behind the carb. So I went down to the local electrical surplus store and bought my own limit switch (which is better than the one Edelbrock uses because it has a roller on the arm) for $2.50 and a a nice goldish colored metal bracket that matched the carb thottle arms for .50 and I was out the door. Came home and bent my own bracket. I chose the front location because it seemed to be better suited to activate my micro switch rather than the choke lever which would rub it the wrong way, and wear it out prematurely. Plus it is very easy to adjust if it is kicking down to early, or late.
Brand new plugs and wires, have not pulled them yet to see, but I know at least they are gapped correctly.

Re: Baby steps
72, that is a good word of advice had not even thought of that, after my water pump broke I ended up getting new heater hose for it so I will probably redirect it.
