Grandpa's bit brace

I have had My Grandfather's bit brace and a set of bits laying around for many years and Saturday night I finally mounted them up on pieces of old fruit crates Mom had. Here's a couple pics.

I have a whole set too, it has always brought back memories of wood shop in Jr hi where they were either too cheep to have electric or they were to afraid of some Neanderthal drilling through his hand. either way it is hard work drilling holes with one of those especially if you have to drill out of position where it is your muscles not your weight creating the force.

Re: Grandpa's bit brace

Thanks, guys! Yes Barn Owl they were very labor intensive in about any position except when you could apply direct weight to them. I worked for a house builder in the late 70's that used one quite a lot still and the low guys on the totem pole got to be the operators!

Those are/were great. They come from the time everything was handmade and craftsmen felt their work.

Yeah it seems like running across real old school craftsmen is getting less common all the time. With time being so valuable, it just is hard to justify not using todays tools in favor of traditional methods.

Thanks again everyone---DAC
